Velia Titta and Her Children – Family Portrait (1926)

Archival Restoration of a Private Post-Bereavement Photograph
Subject: Velia Titta with Giancarlo, Isabella and Matteo
Date: 1926
Provenance: Titta Family Archive
This photograph portrays Velia Titta with her three children in 1926, two years after the death of Giacomo Matteotti. The image belongs to the family archive and documents a private moment within a period of significant political and personal upheaval.
A visible detail of historical interest is the brooch worn by Velia Titta, bearing a portrait of her late husband. The object constitutes a personal commemorative gesture situated within the domestic sphere.
The photograph represents one of the few known surviving images depicting Velia Titta together with all three children.
The Condition
The print exhibited surface abrasions, minor staining and reduced tonal stability due to age-related degradation. Facial definition and small symbolic details were partially obscured by contrast loss.
The Intervention
Norne Legacy conducted a conservative digital restoration in accordance with archival standards.
Facial and detail recovery: Rebalancing of tonal values to restore legibility of faces and small iconographic elements, including the commemorative brooch.
Surface stabilization: Reduction of scratches and stains while preserving the original photographic texture and paper structure.
Material integrity: No smoothing, aesthetic reinterpretation or modernization filters were applied.
The restored image ensures documentary clarity and long-term digital preservation while maintaining the private and testimonial character of the original photograph.
